SYNOPSIS: A truly unique horror ride into the scariest of all places—the mind of a teenage misfit! EXCISION is the story of Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), a delusional teenage outcast. Pauline picks scabs. Pauline dissects road kill. Pauline fantasizes about performing surgery on strangers. Her fascinations disturb her schoolmates and her parents, Phyllis (Traci Lords) and Bob (Roger Bart).

Excision turned critics’ stomachs as well as heads, garnering much attention at festivals this past year. Excision isn’t great for the casual moviegoer but, given the
time, is a worthwhile piece with a cast of colorful characters to be analyzed.

Warning, this movie is not for the feint of heart or the
completely sane. If you’re not a fan of gorgeous, blood-soaked women caught in climaxing
dream sequences, which seem to take place in an artsy, industrial warehouse
where it would only be appropriate that vampires be in the next room, this is
not for you! Excision brings to the screen religion, family affairs,
personality disorders, and sexuality so vividly in this perverse, dark fantasy
that everyone has thought about in the deepest trenches of their minds.
Excision is a tale of a suburban family led by Phyllis,
(Traci Lords) a controlling mother struggling to elevate her family’s status in
the eyes of her community, Bob (Roger Bart) a defeated husband Homer
Simpson-like by way of his involvement in family matters, Grace (Ariel Winter)
the youngest daughter who is slowly dying of cystic fibrosis, and Pauline
(AnnaLynne McCord) a troubled teenage girl and aspiring surgeon whose hobbies
include dissecting dead animals, oh, and did I mention blood?
AnnaLynne McCord’s performance is brilliant and is the
obvious and perhaps only element that makes the film work. She brings new
meaning to teenage angst in this demented dark-comedy. Dark, bushy eyebrows and
a face full of acne transform McCord’s natural beauty yet still she burns with weird
sexual energy that seeps out of the screen and straight into your lap. Pauline makes
you cringe and feel sexually aroused all at once! Kudos to the make-up artist,
McCord is almost unrecognizable in the film. Her portrayal of this weird, high
school misfit is both comical and intriguing.
Pauline brings a charming awkwardness that you cant help but
feel sympathetic for. Through brief monologues where Pauline prays to god, you
see her sincerity of character that is truly humorous. Now, some scenes had me
in a laughing stupor but were short-lived with a following scene that had no
place in the movie. It was incredibly frustrating!
Lords, probably best remembered for her stint in the adult
entertainment industry really shines as Phyllis, a mother who truly loves her
daughter but is incapable of connecting with her on any level. She’s a
character that another mother can really connect with, and a younger adult or
teenager really cannot stand! A controlling mother struggling to have the
perfect family, it is easy to blame her for her daughter’s troubled mind and
although she is a strong factor, Pauline owns up to her own madness. Lords,
sometimes completely unbearable, really nails the mother character and makes you
wonder about these off balance moms who strive to be a part of that step ford
style family.
Several small performances like that of Malcolm MacDowell
the “beloved narrator” of “A Clockwork Orange” and Matthew Gray Gubler both of
whom played teachers at Pauline’s high school added some lighthearted humor to wind
down from the intense scenes of bloody fantasy. The film is a good piece to
find yourself laughing at situations you can only find funny with life
experience, example, your first time having sex. There were definitely some
eyebrow raisers nicely placed throughout.
The film is briefly invaded in several instances by
disturbing visuals of dream sequences of Pauline’s deep and sensual appreciation
for blood. Although the amount of blood could fill a small reservoir, it is not
pure gore but an art form where the love of this red, flowing life force is
felt. Although I appreciated the symmetry of the scenes, as they were
aesthetically pleasing, the cuts between the dream and the reality were choppy
and intruded the rest of the film.
The writing at times was incredibly witty and laugh-out-loud
funny but fell short with terrible cliché lines that completely turned me off.
With minor cuts this dark, comical tale could’ve been a keeper but the follow-the
formula, “teen movie” lines were definitely a drawback. Overall the acting was
all that you could ask for from an indie horror flick but I was never really
terrified of Pauline, which leaves this film out of the horror genre. You feel
sympathetic for Pauline and her plight and laugh at her dementedly sweet
bearing but scared? Not so much. If anything, I was more terrified of Phyllis,
but that doesn't count towards making this a horror film.
